Our library website www.youseemore.com/hbc is the key to finding all of our resources and materials. You may either search for items that the library has using the search box above or you may find materials in our Alabama Digital Library . (see the top of the left column). Please ask for your database password for using the digital library. We also have Research Guides for each program area and a wealth of other information, including a CALENDAR of campus events, student DISCOUNTS, TEXTBOOKS, CAREER SERVICES, and many other items. (also shown in the left column). Computers located in the Electronic Resource area allow you to search the internet and use Microsoft Office 2007 software to type papers, create slide shows, compile lists, and many other activities. These computers are for research only. NO email, chat rooms, or games are permitted. There is a 1-hour limit on the computers if others are waiting. In addition, the Library Homepage may be accessed from any computer on the internet.
Our BOOKS are shelved on metal stacks in the library. Books marked Reference Section must stay in the library. Other books may be checked out for 3 WEEKS. We use the Library of Congress classification system of shelving. A directory of topics is attached to the end of each stack.
Our Periodicals are kept in the two forward sets of metal shelves. Current issues are kept upright on the shelf and past issues are found underneath. Just lift up the same shelf. In addition to those magazines available in the library, thousands of titles are available in our full-text Alabama Digital Library (password needed). The best way to find relevant articles is to click on "Supersearch" in the digital collection. Periodicals may be checked out for 3 weeks. Issues of magazines older than one year are converted to microfilm. Microfilm boxes are arranged alphabetically on the remaining shelves. The Microfilm Reader/Printer is located in the center of the library. Ask for help when using this machine for the first time.
We maintain a Vertical File Collection of over 400 topics. These topics cover many current issues and are useful for beginning research for numerous projects. These articles may be checked out for 3 weeks. An index of topics hangs on the side of the cabinet. They are also indexed in our catalog.
Kaplan College also subscribes to most local Newspapers and several national newspapers. The newspapers are generally discarded after a month. Many other newspapers are also available through "Supersearch" in the Alabama Digital Library. The library also has over 540 Videos and DVD's for your use.
For learning how to write papers and do research, try our English & Research Guide . We have many books in the library for different styles of writing (APA, MLA, etc.). For constructing citations and then pasting them into your bibliography, see the Citation Builder .
